Are you working “in” your business or “on” your business as Michael Gerber says? (Author of E-Myth Revisted). My colleague, Marsha Sims, didn’t know how much she was in her own way until she took a traveling training position and hired others to run her professional organizing business. The organizing business is making more than ever right now.
Marsha attributes this to having to learn to let go and delegate to others. This is not easy for a small business owner, especially if the business is you. You will know when it’s time. When you’ve capped out your earning potential. Or when your family never sees you anymore. Or when you’re so tired that you begin to lose passion for the business. This growing pain…of knowing when to use others…is one most small business owners experience at some time.
It’s happening to me which is why in the last two weeks I’ve hired two new part-time staff people. I’ve got to stop doing it all. These last few weeks have been filled with training and not much creative product development time, but I’ve got to forge ahead.
Marsha helped to remind me that going through the uncomfortable start-up period with new folks is only short-term. If I don’t get over my own control issues and let go, I’ll never grow. I’m working on it. How about you? Are you getting in your own way?
